Counsel

Cause of Action (CoA) is the nation’s only government accountability group that combines investigative, legal, and communications tools to educate the public on how government transparency and accountability protects economic opportunity for American taxpayers.

Cause of Action is looking to hire a Counsel to advance a free society through strategic investigations and litigation to fight unconstitutional government overreach and expose waste, fraud, and abuse in the government.  Cause of Action is an independent 501(c)(3) public interest group that uses public advocacy and legal reform tools to ensure greater transparency in government, protect taxpayer interests, and promote economic freedom.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work with senior counsels and team leaders to manage matters including strategy, outreach, media, and delegation of assignments.
  • Assist with strategic and tactical decisions in litigation working with senior counsels to fill gaps in legal knowledge.
  • Assist with training junior attorneys and mentor existing staff to build their legal writing, advocacy, case management, and research skills.
  • Ensure that effective messaging, outreach, and investigative work is occurring in addition to legal work.
  • In consultation with senior counsels, manage assigned cases and matters for strategic litigation, meet with clients on strategic litigation matters, and research ways to leverage existing connections into new strategic litigation.
  • Work with communications and investigative staff to assign and divide workloads relating to specific issues.
  • Under leadership’s consultation, draft op-eds, columns, or articles presenting Cause of Action’s work and ideas to legal academics and professionals.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree required
  • Admitted to the District of Columbia bar or eligible for admission within 90 days of hiring
  • 5-10 years of experience in government investigations and complex federal litigation strongly preferred
  • Federal clerkship experience, published scholarship, and/or moot court experience are highly preferred
  • Demonstrated interest in government accountability work as well as administrative and constitutional law
  • Experience and/or interest in Cause of Action core competencies: executive branch oversight (Hatch Act, IG investigations), administrative law (APA), government accountability and transparency, FOIA, False Claims Act, regulatory overreach (ultra vires actions, Bivens actions, Federal Tort Claims Act actions), agency politicization, federal oversight, federal grant oversight, and 18 U.S.C. 1913/Byrd Anti-Lobbying Act issues
  • An understanding of free market principles and a passion for advancing the mission of the organization is required

Communications Manager

Cause of Action is looking to hire a Communications Manager to generate and build communications strategies that drive media coverage and public awareness for its investigations, litigation, and issue areas. Cause of Action is an independent 501(c) (3) public interest group that uses public advocacy and legal reform tools to ensure greater transparency in government, protect taxpayer interests, and promote economic freedom.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute communications strategies for a variety of projects including investigations, litigation, and policy issue areas to help shape the narrative in the media and to reinforce and achieve CoA’s goals.
  • Draft effective material such as media pitches, press releases, op-eds, social media, and web content, as well as edit content produced by staff.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and staff and outside groups on message development and strategy.
  • Conduct proactive media pitching to radio, print, television and online outlets garnering positive media coverage, and identify new and ongoing strategies for pitching our issues.
  • Build targeted media lists and research relevant reporters and build relationships as appropriate.
  • Work with prospective and new clients to help establish a media relations strategy.
  • Engage in entrepreneurial thinking to develop ideas for digital and visual media concepts that will push our messages to a broader audience.
  • Potential to grow into a supervisory role, managing junior communications staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • 6+ years of professional experience in media outreach is strongly preferred
  • Professional experience within a PR firm, Hill office, or campaign is preferred
  • Demonstrated success in leading and implementing effective communications plans
  • Possess solid understanding of and relationships with reporters at leading national newspapers, magazines, broadcast, and online outlets that cover issues relevant to the mission of the organization
  • Experience managing full-time staff is required
  • Must be highly motivated, a self-starter, detail-oriented, organized, and possess a commitment to excellence
  • Experience juggling multiple issues, clients, and accounts is required
  • An understanding of free market principles and a passion for advancing the mission of the organization is required
